All WordPress plugins are permitted for use on PeoplesHost shared servers. However, our monitoring team may identify a WordPress plugin/plugins or combination of plugins that lead to high resource usage (high MySQL, CPU, RAM, I/O) from your account. By signing up for PeoplesHost services, you agreed to the PeoplesHost Acceptable Use Policy “AUP” stating that you or end users of your website will not abuse or use excessive amounts of server resources that leads to the degradation of services for other customers. PeoplesHost reserves the right to modify settings or disable plugins in real-time, without notice, from offending accounts.

PeoplesHost has compiled a list of offending WordPress plugins that are known to cause high resource usage. Please review this list of plugins and modify the settings or completely disable and delete the plugin to reduce the resource usage from your account.

Security Plugins

  • Wordfence
  • better-wp-security
  • BulletProof Security

Many security plugins are redundant to the daily scanning and security already present on our environments to protect customers against brute force attacks, XML-RPC attacks, malicious code injections, and other forms of malware. These security plugins cause high MySQL, CPU, RAM, and I/O usage on the shared servers.

NOTE: This can be permitted should you disable the real-time, daily, and weekly scanning of website files.

Backup Plugins

  • Updraft (Plus version is permitted as long as backups are stored remotely)
  • BackUpWordPress
  • BackWPup
  • WP Database Backup

Some backup plugins may cause a large number of MySQL queries when running, causing slow site and page timeouts, especially if run during peak hours. Backup plugins are also redundant. PeoplesHost provides free daily backups for all customers with shared hosting accounts. These daily backups are stored on separate backup servers allowing you to quickly restore your files and database(s) if needed.

NOTE: Storing ANY account backups locally violates our TOS/AUP, and such backups will be removed automatically.

Despite the popularity of these related post plugins, they are very database intensive and cause many problems with regards to MySQL.

Broken Link Checker / 404 Plugins

  • Broken Link Checker
  • Link Checker

Link checkers are known to run ongoing scans and recurring processes throughout the day causing high CPU usage. Please consider using external services such as Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

You won’t be penalized for broken links. Google’s own John Mueller stated, “Googlebot isn’t going to lose sleep over broken links…If you find things like this, I’d fix it primarily for your users, so that they’re able to use your site completely.”

Captcha/reCAPTCHA Plugins

  • Captcha Booster: Best Captcha Plugin

Some Captcha plugins are outdated and cause issues with page speed and page load. An alternative we recommend is Google Captcha (reCAPTCHA) Plugin. This plugin allows you to set up the Google reCAPTCHA box or invisible reCAPTCHA if you choose.

Here is a full list of disallowed plugins. These plugins are disallowed on shared hosting environments due to being outdated, having various security vulnerabilities, and high resource (CPU, I/O, Memory) usage.
